Jane Johnson Honored as Cultural Award Recipient at the Charlotte African American Festival

In a powerful celebration of culture, artistry, and community impact, Jane Johnson — Founder, CEO, and Artistic Director of Vision Elite Royalty School of Dance (VERSOD) and Vision Elite Royalty Dance Theatre (VERDT) — has been named a Cultural Award Honoree at the 13th Annual Charlotte African American Festival.

Set against a vibrant backdrop that reflects both heritage and pride, the recognition highlights Johnson’s unwavering commitment to using dance as a vehicle for storytelling, empowerment, and cultural preservation. Her work has not only elevated dancers technically, but has also created spaces where identity, history, and expression are honored and celebrated.

For years, Jane Johnson has been a driving force in the dance community throughout the Carolinas and beyond. Through VERSOD, she has cultivated an elite, pre-professional training environment focused on discipline, excellence, and intentional growth. Through VERDT, she has expanded that vision onto the stage — building a professional touring company that merges contemporary movement with African diasporic influences, theatrical storytelling, and live performance elements.

Her work goes beyond choreography.

It is rooted in purpose.

Johnson has consistently created opportunities for young dancers — particularly Black dancers — to see themselves reflected in positions of leadership, excellence, and artistry. She has built a legacy centered on access, representation, and high-level training, while also ensuring that culture is never separated from the art form.

The Charlotte African American Festival, a cornerstone cultural event, celebrates Black excellence across industries — from arts and education to business and community leadership. Being selected as a Cultural Award Honoree places Jane Johnson among a distinguished group of individuals who are actively shaping and preserving cultural narratives within their communities.

This recognition is not just about past achievements — it’s a reflection of ongoing impact.

Through performances, productions, community engagements, and educational initiatives, Johnson continues to push boundaries and redefine what it means to lead in the dance world. Her influence can be seen in the confidence of her dancers, the quality of her productions, and the growing presence of her organization on regional and national stages.

But perhaps most importantly, her work reminds us of the role dance plays in culture itself.

Dance is not just performance — it is history, identity, and voice. And through her leadership, Jane Johnson ensures that those elements are not only preserved, but elevated.

As she is honored at this year’s festival, one thing is clear:

Jane Johnson is not just building dancers — she is building legacy.
